3 days exercise

Again, it is a slacking day. Staying in the office doing nothing without any entertainment is really boring. I tried to find some things to entertain myself but the room has nothing interesting.

Tomorrow I am going for a battery exercise for 3 days straight outfield. That will be my first outfield as a safety officer for my unit.

Slacking all day

Slack, slack and slack. Today the whole day I am doing nothing but slack. Morning, slack, chit chatting in the office until lunch time. Then after lunch, slack again. Went back to office but it was locked. So other 3 of my friends and I went back to bunk and slack. I was lying on my bed, reading my O2 user manual until I fell asleep. Woke up at 5.15 and called my dad to pick me up to go home. Isn’t it a slack day? Haha…

O2 XdaIIi

After such a long consideration and waiting, at last, I bought my new O2 XdaIIi yesterday at Sim Lim Square. The phone is fantastic. I have no words to say about it. Looks great, works great and best of all, it is the phone with many functions. Hehe…

Routine

Last night, my bunk mate did not stay out. He stayed over for last night. Morning, as usual I woke up early to prepare myself for my camp’s routine Tuesday and Thursday life run. We are to reach the stadium for warm up by 0725. It was 0705 already and my bunk mate is still asleep. I thought he had forgotten to set his alarm clock so I went over to wake him up. He woke up, took a look at his phone’s clock, and said it was still early. He set his alarm at 0710. I was like… err… oh well, now I know my bunk mate’s wake up routine is like.

At my camp’s e-mart, I met a driver who I know during my training in Thailand. I think he did not know that I had commissioned as an Officer. We were both the same batch during BMT days. He was Whisky Company while I was in Viper. During the days out in the field in Thailand, we used to chat during our free time or when I was doing my sentry duty. He is a nice and approachable person. Good to make more friends. Next time when in need, who knows he can give you a hand.

First official job

Today, every lesson was short. As a result, end of most lessons, we were just chatting with the seniors in the unit about their experiences and work scope in the unit. We were basically talking about anything we can think of.

This evening, it was my first time conducting a stand-by with my colleagues on our unit's HQ Battery. We were checking for contraband items. But the main objective is to check who possess high quantity amount of medicines or illegal drugs. I was checking the medic’s bunk. Medic? Erm… how to check on them? It will be very common for them to carry many drugs with them. Haha… anyway, my friend and I still did a thorough check.

Lonely... I'm so lonely...

Yesterday night, I realized that I am going to be the only person who is going to sleep in the bunk. I woke up at almost midnight and see no one in my bunk. Then an hour later I woke up and see no one again. From then on, I realized it is going to be this way for the days to come. My room mates, one is a CPT, who stays out and anyway he is leaving soon, and the other one is a LTA who stays out too.

I do not know it is a good thing or a bad one. I will be alone in my bunk, no one to talk to, no one to disturb me and no one to fight with. Quite lonely. But who cares! The whole bunk seems to belong to myself! Haha…

First day of work

First day of work, I totally do not know what I am in camp for. We spent the whole morning doing the administration work such as getting our permanent camp passes, personal particulars and briefing by our manpower.

In the noon, we have to move bed frames, mattresses and cupboard to our new bunks. They have allocated us to a 2 man bunk but we are inserting another bed in it to become a 3 man bunk. I don’t understand why though. Maybe they do not have enough bunks at the HQ where all officers stay. Artillery Institute, AI had problems with their bunk allocations. Think their manpower did not make an effort to get bunks ready for those staying in AI. So now they have to stay out for the time being.

Staying at the new HQ block, there are pros and cons. The block is new, toilet is new, bunks are new but became dirty because officers don’t do much area cleaning, but we wanted to stay out! It is so sad to stay in camp even though we had commissioned.

Anyway, It is going to be a slow week. We have to go on some course this week. I am quite surprised that my Chief of Clerk told me that I had to attend a safety investigation course, something like that, on 21-23 December. Why huh? Haha… I thought I am a FO. But after I go through that course, I will find myself doing more things than a normal FO in terms of any safety investigation if there is any.

I should be looking into my welfare soon. What entertainment to bring into my bunk to enjoy during admin time. Haha… Time for dinner.

End of Idle

It is so fast. Why do time flies when we are enjoying ourselves and it is so slow when we hope the dreary day pass quicker? I dread the day I have to go back camp to face the reality. Reluctantly, I packed my duffel bag with all my personal military items in them. Is it called duffel bag? I think they should change its name. Now it is not the old cylindrical bag with drawstring anymore. It should be named the luggage or kit bag. Whatever.

Even though I am commissioned as an Officer, I hate my vocation. Being a Forward Observer, FO, is like being in an infantry unit. One of the reasons I choose to go over to Artillery is because I do not want to live in an infantry life. I want to stay away from camouflage creams, long marches. Maybe I am slack but I wanted to do more than that. I want to handle more intricate weaponries. Since I am now posted to 23SA, I will try to blend into the unit and make myself useful.

Time to sleep.

First week of commission

My week was so slack. Nothing to do, until I do not know what to do. Army slack no good meh? Good, but sometimes you just wish weekend comes faster. I had cleared my 2 and half day leave this week, which were my off in-lieu for the burnt weekends and overseas training in Thailand. I still have 2 days leave and do not know how to clear them. This week’s leave was planned for by my ex-instructors.

Monday was half day. After de-kitting my parade uniforms, I went home and slack all the way. Tuesday too was my leave. It is hard to get friends out during weekdays as they are working whereas I am on leave. Then, I am on a maintenance course on Wednesday and Thursday. Yesterday was my leave again. That time, I picked up my phone and messaged 2 of my friends, asking them out after their work. We went to Orchard and I shopped for my Blazer which is for my Commissioning Ball.

I see numbers, from 119 to 1200. I can’t imagine people are spending $1200 for just a blazer; they are loaded! We walked into many outlets such as Calvin Klein, ZARA and in the end, we landed at G2000. I bought a blazer which is at $249 which comes with a free pair of pants. Very nice and I love it.

Waiting for bank to open it doors.

A New Chapter

Wow... The day has finally come. It’s the end of my trainee chapter and a beginning of my new officership chapter. 1 year 1 month and 12 days of training, it is like a blink of an eye. I remembers the day I walked out of Tekong as a Private, re-enter Tekong to SISPEC as a trainee for Sergeant course, and a few weeks later I walked out of Tekong again and crossed over to OCS, from OCS I moved to Khatib Camp to be trained as an Artillery Officer, went back to OCS for the past 2 weeks to rehearse for my commissioning parade and at last, I was commissioned yesterday! It had being a happening and memorable path for me during the past 1 year. Moving from place to place, I met different people from different walks of life. It is a very fruitful journey.

For the past 2 weeks, rehearsing for the commissioning parade was not easy. Though not as intense as National Day parade or SAF day, the standards to meet is still high. During the first day, I almost fainted. I endured it till my SSM, School Sergeant Major, fall us out to take a rest. As days past, I got used to it.

Not only do we rehearse for the parade, we also had a few days rehearsing on our ACPC, Army Appointment Certificate Presentation Ceremony, to get my sword and certificate. The dinner was very formal. You know those long rows of table with a perpendicular set of long table in the end of the hall. I had a bit of difficulties having my dinner that night as my movements are restricted…. haa… I love the Port wine served for a toss to the President of the Republic of Singapore. The wine is sweet. I should have poured more into my glass… hee…

The 58/04 OCC Commissioning Parade yesterday, 1st October 2005, was not as spectacular as I imagined. Quite a few mistakes made by some. But the weather was good. The parade successfully completed, ending with the tossing of our peak caps. Then soon after, we were told that Cat 1, lightning hazard, had started. I was so glad that I was able to toss my cap. That was the moment everyone was waiting for. With our 2nd Lieutenant rank, we danced and jumped with joy in the parade square like kids celebrating Children’s Day. A new life was born in everyone.
