All these years, Architecture has meant to me with a singular and direct reason, to design beautiful architecture and space. But this has slowly changed as I move further into the final stage of my academic “milestone”.
Life could have been better if I were to choose something other than Architecture. Maybe a photographer, a builder, a gardener, or an IT technician. Thoughts have been running through my head today about the meaning of Architecture. I have been revisiting the reason to Architecture for me. What kind of person I am towards Architecture.
Frankly, I am not a theoretical person. I don’t like reading books. I don’t like to talk about who said this who said that. I don’t like to reference. Why do we reference? What do we reference? We reference to reinforce our argument? Is there the need to do it? Yes in academia papers, but what about during practice? Is there something in us that we need that reference to be accepted because it is a “right of thought”?
I am just a practical person, a person who has a limited numbers of vocabulary. I have a poor memory in remembering words and names. I don’t like to use bombastic words. It is from all these contributing factors that leads me to understand my position in Architecture.
I am so practical that I design things in a way they must work. I create space that respond to user’s basic needs, but I am not a boring designer. I am concern about the environmental quality we live in that I prefer to design using elements that provides not only a good working environment for users but also a sustainable approach to use renewable energy. I uses the minimal amount of materials and components and in favour for exploiting the available natural resources I can get from the site.
I disagree with the way of Architecture. Architecture is very subjective and it is that way since the day I step into school and learn about Architecture. It is a bias subject. It is a subject that will always have questions. Why do we do it? What is the reason? Why? How? And? So? Those are some of the questions that are always asked. Is there a simpler way we can approach Architecture? Why do we have to complicate thing? I am a simple minded person when it comes to Architecture. So please don’t complicate my thoughts and talk to me about theorist. They bore me. They are only a stranger to me.
